THE ST JAGO CHESS OPEN in 2012 returns with an expanded format to accommodate the amazing growth of Chess in St. Catherine and across the island.

Still with its unique team and individual play format from last year the 2012 renewal of the THE ST. JAGO CHESS OPEN to be held at St. Jago High School grounds in Spanish Town St. Catherine on July 7th and July 8th 2012 features a new exclusive St. Jago Primary and Preparatory Unit. This new Unit will go alongside the other four sections which include: The Ravensworth Elite Unit, The St. Jago Open Unit, The St Jago Intermediate Unit and The St. Jago Amateur Unit.

The new Primary and Preparatory Unit will be a rated tournament that will be completed on July 7th in six rounds and is expected to have more than 200 children participating.

Interest in the tournament this year is very high as it will be the final tournament before Jamaica’s best journey off to Istanbul, Turkey to play in the Chess Olympiad this summer.

Coach for the Jamaican women, NM Russell Porter has already indicated that all the women in training will be sharpening up their skills at this tournament. Two of these women, WFM Deborah Richards-Porter and Zhu Hui will be playing in the top section The Ravensworth Elite Unit.

All 2011 Unit winners will have their registration fees waived another St. Jago Chess Open local tournament innovation.

Defending Ravensworth Elite Unit winner, National Master Andrew Mellace fresh from his class act performance in the National Championships in April which he won along with training partner NM Damion Davy, has confirmed that he will be on hand to defend his title. Battles in this section threaten to be fierce and might well be one of the most intense tournaments for the year as NM Devlin Sinclair will be flying in from the United States to participate in the two day tourney

Defending St. Jago Open Unit winner Miguel Asher will also be there in what will also be a section with competition of fire as a number of former elite players have slipped down into this Unit and we are sure will not be taking any prisoners when they play.

A number of sponsors have come on board to help the recently launched St. Jago Chess Academy make this event possible. Sponsors include: NCB,  The Gleaner Company, Oxford University Press, DaCosta Construction among many others. These sponsors along with individuals are helping to offset administration and the prize fund which is in excess of $150,000.

The tournament, approved by the Jamaica Chess Federation, will be an internationally rated where chess players the option of registering individually or in teams of three. While in a team a player will still be able to compete individually.

There will be cash and other prizes for all the Units. There will be other sectional prizes catering for players from under eight years old, under ten years and under 12, also The Best High School Team, The Best Team from St. Catherine, The Best Female Team, The Best Team from a Prep or Primary School and the Best Team from a Company/Business.
